ORM software encourages bad design decisions and propagates entrenched mythology about database performance. ORMs are the canonical example of the leaky abstraction—they require intimate knowledge of their internal workings as well as the database in order to work well. If you try to use them as a shield to avoid learning about your database, you wind up with slow and buggy applications.
Use ORM sparingly, and accept that whichever one you choose, you're making a profound investment, so don't make the choice lightly.
